East Yorkshire Morris Minor Owners Club
The club owes its origins to a get together by a few friends way
back in 1983 to discuss the possibility of starting a local branch of the‘Morris Minor Owners Club’. The discussions led to a short feature in the local news paper ‘The Hull Daily Mail’ in June 1983 to promote the inaugural meeting held on 12 July 1983 at the Tiger Inn Lairgate, Beverley. Such was the large amount of interest in the formation of the branch that a move to a larger venue at the ‘Lady le Gros’ on the opposite side of Beverley was needed for the first few months. Though once numbers settled down the club returned to the room at the Tiger Inn where the first meeting had been held, and where it continues to hold its monthly meetings and serve the needs of the regions Morris Minor owners and enthusiasts today.
Held on the first Tuesday of each month the clubs meetings have always included talks on a wide range of subjects (not just related to the Minor), quiz nights and seasonal celebrations with occasional group outings and road runs on other evenings or weekend days. The meetings are supported by a clubs monthly magazine which after an intermittent start in the early years, has since 1993 become a must read monthly periodical for club members and a way of keeping in touch for those who cannot get to all meetings. With a membership which includes some of the original founders the club is well respected and prides itself of on its friendly and sociable atmosphere with a programme of events suitable for individuals and couples of all ages. This formula has generated many long standing friendships plus in one instance was how two members met and subsequently married in 2010.
Throughout the clubs history the membership and their vehicles have always been very active and successful participants in local and national classic car rallies and events. Members have even taken cars over the Channel to rallies in Europe and for well over a decade we were guests of the IMMOC at the annual All Ireland International Morris Minor Rally in Bandon Co. Cork. Though the main event for us is the clubs own annual Morris Minor Rally. The first of these took place at Sewerby Hall near Bridlington in 1983 only 2 months after the formation of the club. Where, after a decade of holding rallies in conjunction with other events around the area, such as Cottingham Show, The Wanderers Custom Car Show at Burton Constable Hall and Ottringham WI show the rally was to return in 1993 and now forms a major feature in Sewerby Halls August calendar of events. Over the years the event has grown to attract a wide range of rare and desirable vehicles from throughout the history of the cars production. With as many as a hundred cars attending on some occasions and many enthusiasts from near and far returning year upon year to sample the hospitality, take in the sites and generally enjoy a good day at the seaside.
